Ashburton 2.10.71

On 2nd October 1971 the Ashburton branch was about to close for the last time to allow construction of the A38 over its route. It had been closed by BR to freight on 10.9.1962 but had a brief renaissance under the auspices of the Dart Valley Railway from 5.4.1969. The roadbuilders would have their way, however, and BR organised a final through train from Paddington to Ashburton, powered by Brush type 4 1660 to Totnes Riverside, and DVR steam from there to Ashburton. This wasn't quite the last train, as there was, I believe, one final DVR one.
