Radstock to Portishead brake van trip, 1970

In the spring of 1970 a group of final year students from Manchester University Railway Society toured the West Country, with just enough sense to do some branches which have now been closed for many years. One of the highlights was a brake van trip from Radstock to Portishead, which took coal from (among other places) Kilmersdon Colliery. At that time the rail connection to Kilmersdon was a short branch of which the first part was a rope worked incline, unusual even 40 years ago.
