The Horncastle branch, opened in 1855, ran for just over 7 miles through flat Lincolnshire countryside from Woodhall Junction (formerly Kirkstead) through Woodhall Spa to Horncastle. It closed to passengers in 1954 and to freight in 1971. About a year before closure, in the early part of 1970, I was able to travel over the line on a brake van trip and unlike many other similar ventures I did actually manage to take a few photographs! Unfortunately I didn't note the date but I do remember it being 1970 and the remnants of snow on one or two of the pictures suggest it was probably January or February. There's a lot of useful information on the line at the admirable Disused Stations web site which also has links to other material on the branch.
